- It is time now for the Alabama State Legislature to stand up to law-breaking gambling operators and put some real teeth in our state law. Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange has called on the State Legislature to pass a bill that will increase the penalties under current law from misdemeanors to felonies with heavy fines.

By RON HARRISDaily Mountain EagleA joint effort between the Walker County Sheriff’s Office and Jasper Police Department led to the seizure of almost 50 illegal gambling machines at four separate locations this week. With search warrants in hand, sheriff’s deputies and Jasper police raided four businesses that were operating the illegal gambling machines, Sheriff Jim Underwood said Thursday afternoon. Forty electronic gaming computers were seized, along with $6,077 in cash, at ‘Bid City’ located on U.S. 78 next to Clayton Homes. Underwood said ‘Bid City’ was operating under the guise of a bidding service where players bid on merchandise.“Undercover agents were allowed to conduct video gaming and were paid in U.S. currency, with no requirements to bid on anything,” Underwood said. Underwood said unlike drug raids, local departments are not allowed to keep any cash seized during illegal gambling raids. Money seized must be turned over to the state after forfeiture proceedings are complete. In the second of four raids, two video gaming machines were seized, along with $185 in cash, at the Boldo Crown gas station in Boldo. Underwood said winners were allowed the option of getting paid in gasoline, scratch-off tickets that pay cash winnings or store merchandise.Three gaming machines were seized at the Valley One Stop gas station in Boldo, Underwood said. Investigators also seized $647 in cash.
